Obituary

Brian Lynn Westerfeld (65) of Batesville,Indiana, died Feb. 28, 2012. His strongest assets were his faith, his family, his friends and his love of the Belgian draft horse. Brian graduated in 1964 from Batesville High School, received his BS from Purdue University and MS from Kansas State University. He was employed with Eli Lilly & Co., (ELANCO) for 34 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the Batesville Lodge 668 F&AM and currently secretary for the Indiana Belgian Draft Horse Assoc. in which he was also a member for many years. He is survived by his wife Joan, of 45 years of marriage. Also surviving are three children and eight grandchildren; Thad (Jennifer, Emma and Hayden) of Edinburgh, IN. Travis ( Shari, Lane, Hattie and Ellie) of Batesville, IN. Jessi (Daryl, Mitchell, Alan and Grace) Ellis of Trafalgar, IN. Also surviving is Brian's mother, Ouida Westerfeld, sisters Pamela (David) Abplanalp, Penelope (Jim) Snodgrass, and brother Barclay L. (Eddie Nelson) Westerfeld. He was preceded in death by his father William Westerfeld. One of Brian's greatest joys was watching his grand children play sports. He was so proud of their athleticism and he made it a priority to watch every event the kids were participating in. The "great eight" were the love of his life. Brian and Joan began showing Belgian draft horses in 1983 when they lived in Franklin, IN. They moved to the Batesville family (Flodder) farm in 1999 and continued raising and showing their beloved Belgian horses throughout the United States and Canada. Every family member, plus several dedicated friends, were involved in this exhausting and exhilarating business. Brian absolutely loved the Belgian horse and all the great friends he met along the way. He was a man of strong convictions with strong family values. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. Visitation will be Friday, March 2, 2012 from 4-8pm at St. John United Church of Christ (Huntersville) in Batesville, IN.
