John E. Wonning, age 88 years of Osgood, IN passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009 at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville, IN. Born July 17, 1920 in Batesville he was the son of the late Monroe H. & Clara (Clemenz) Wonning. After graduating from Batesville High School, he joined the US Army Air Corp and was a radio operator on a B17. His plane was shot down over German occupied France where he was picked up by the French Underground but had to be turned over to the Germans because they could not treat his wounds. He was later wounded again when American planes strafed what they thought was a German troop train but was being used to transport both military and civilian prisoners of war. This time his wounds were very serious. After the war he worked for his father's dairy farm & later bought the processing plant from his dad. John also played the saxophone in several local dance bands. He married Maxine Bush on April 17, 1945 in Louisville, KY. They moved to Florida in 1963 and owned a mobile home park. He later worked & retired from the Phillips Corp. in Florida. Mr. Wonning is survived by his wife Maxine Wonning; daughter Connie (Ernie) Walke of Osgood, IN; grandchildren Jeff Walke, Tamara Drazick & Ben Walke and great grandchildren Trae, Shaden & Devery Drazick and Tyler & Kayla Walke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Juanita "Neetz" Lindemann. Visitation will be Monday, June 29, 2009 from 11am 1pm followed by services at 1pm all at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Batesville, IN with Pastor Jill Kepler Campbell officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Mark Lutheran Church c/o the funeral home.
