Joseph Everett Martin, age 82, of Batesville formerly of West Harrison, Indiana died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville, IN. Born July 23, 1928 in Cleves, OH to Robert & Anna (Wurzelbacher) Martin on their family farm, the retired Union Carpenter learned farming at an early age. He was an engineer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. On October 30, 1953 he married Laurine Wise in Cleves, OH. She preceded him in death on July 21, 1985. Joe loved to eat and Sunday was known as the day he would make fried chicken and eat it all himself. Holidays were a special time for him too. He loved spending time with his great grandchildren as they always put a smile on his face, even until the end. Joe worked as a carpenter and was used to working on high scaffolding as well as on roads, building many bridges, buildings, roads etc. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, the outdoors and sitting on his porch. Joe was very proud of his long family tradition of serving in the US Military and showed it by displaying pictures and memorabilia of all his relatives who have served as well. He was a proud father, brother and grandfather, who will be sadly missed. He is survived by his daughters, Brenda J. Gunter (Don) of Batesville, Jennifer T. Hensley of Amarillo, TX and son, Carlos Martin of OH; grandchildren Christy Swingle (Duane), Mike Gunter (Misty), Cheri Laker (Brian), Carrie Keyes (Andy), Brittany Paige Hensley and Kyle Kelley; great grandchildren Cody & Colt Swingle, Cat, Cayla & Christopher Gunter, Brooklynn & McKenzie Laker, Daulton & Alexis Keyes, and Lucas Cade. Visitation, Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 10am-1pm followed by funeral services at 1pm all at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN. Pastor William Powlen officiating. Military funeral rites will immediately follow at the funeral home. Then burial in Riverview Cemetery in Aurora, IN. Memorials may be given to Adams Lutheran Church.
