Juanita Mae Nussbaum, age 81 of Batesville, IN passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at The Water of Batesville. Born June 15, 1932 in Hannibal, MO and was the daughter of Lester & Ruth (Truxell) Walker. She married Kenneth L. Nussbaum on July 10, 1954 in Cheyenne, WY. She graduated from Cheyenne High School, was a member of Batesville United Methodist Church and formerly Gaylord United Methodist Church in Michigan. She retired as school secretary. Juanita had many interests throughout her life. She was an avid reader who understood staying up all night to finish a good book. Her children remember her love of playing cards. Later in life computerized card games became her entertainment. She loved making things: food, pies, toys, Christmas stockings, and dresses for her daughter and granddaughters. Juanita never met a stranger. She talked to everyone she ran into, sharing stories and listening with great interest to theirs. She loved taking walks with her daughter and their dogs through Liberty Park before coffee in the morning. Juanita and Kenny owned an RV for many years. In the summer they would head West and visit their family in Wyoming and South Dakota. In the winter months they would head South to visit family and friends in Texas. They never passed the opportunity to visit with friends along the way. All of her grandchildren remember camping with them as children. Juanita loved to have friends visit. She is remembered fondly by her children's friends, who have said her smile was what they remember best. Juanita was known for her generosity, sharing freely her time and talents. She was a leader in both Girl and Boy Scouts, a Band Mom, Sunday School teacher, 4H Leader among many others. She volunteered with her church in many capacities. She worked at food pantries and walked in the very first Relay for Life in Gaylord, Michigan. Her faith and love of life comforted her when age began working on her body. Stricken with arthritis in her mid forties, she endured many joint replacements and procedures, earning the nickname of the Bionic Woman. Her sense of adventure was well known and she always thought she could do anything she put her mind to do, usually succeeding. Juanita is survived by her husband Ken Nussbaum, children Barbara (Kent) Nettnay of Batesville, IN; Gerald (Sue) Nussbaum of Surrey British Columbia, Canada & Mark (Debbi) Nussbaum of Oak Park, IL. She will also be missed by her grandchildren Carrie Nussbaum, Ken (Brenda) Nussbaum, Tim (Rachel) Nussbaum & Alix (Nick) Craft all of Seattle, WA, Jacob Nettnay of Batesville, IN, Joshua Nussbaum of Minneapolis, MN and Samantha Nussbaum of Normal, IL and great grandchildren Amos, Vera & Owen Nussbaum, Liam Nussbaum and Wilder Craft.
