Margaret Ann Hooten, age 89 of Batesville, IN died Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital. Born June 8, 1922 in Batesville to the late Harry and Mathilda (Billman) Ferkenhoff. The 1940 Batesville High School graduate married John Hooten August 8, 1942 at St. Louis Church. He preceded her in death on February 14, 2008 after 65 years of a wonderful marriage. Margaret was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church which she loved very much. She was a past president and member of the St. Louis School P.T.A. and the past president and member of the Prell Bland American Legion Post 271 Auxiliary for 41 years, as well. Margaret loved to cook. Her specialty was homemade turtle soup. She loved cooking for her family and the many folks that would stop by her home to visit. Her friends and family would know when she was making her soup because you could smell it when you got off the interstate. Margaret also loved her flowers and spending time in the flower garden. The neighborhood kids all loved Mrs. Hooten, as she was known to them, and were always coming over for cookies and candy. To say she loved playing cards would be an understatement. If 2 or more people came in through back door, it was a card game in progress. Her children said she could be strict when needed, but was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by all. The only hatred she had in her was, hating that some folks had to go without, so donating to the Food Pantry or Shop With a Cop program was a common occasion. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Griffin of Butler, KY, Patti Wuestefeld and Debbie Kramer both of Batesville and Peggy Engelke of Soldotna, AK; sons, Ronald J. and Larry Hooten of Batesville and John J. Hooten of Lawrenceburg, IN; sisters, Gloria Ferkenhoff of Cincinnati, OH and Elverna Comer of Rushville, IN; along with 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Olivia Bentfield, Clotilda Schreiner, Maggie Bartling, Eugenia Willett, Juanita Chappellow, Carl Ferkenhoff and Mary Ferkenhoff who died as an infant. Visitation is Friday, 10:30am to 12:30 pm at Meyers Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, May 25, 2012 at 1:00pm at St. Louis Church with Father Randy Summers officiating. Burial is in St. Louis Church Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St Louis School.
