Marguerite Maureen Thackery Walker, 99 years and 24 days of Batesville, IN died peacefully on January 24, 2011 at Crown Point Senior Living Center in Greensburg, IN. She was the wife of the late Owen Walker and is survived by three children; Frank Walker (Margot) of New Hampshire, Wesley Walker (Judy) of Batesville and Vergie Sharp (John) of New Point. Grandchildren include Fern Baumer (John) of Batesville, Andrew Walker (Jessica) of New York, Annette Martin of Florida, Tammie Wonning of Florida, Bradley Walker (Becky) of Kentucky and Wendy Blank (Brian) of Washington State. She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents Logan & Virginia (Steele) Thackery, son Chestley Walker died as an infant and siblings Benjamin Thackery, Harley Thackery & Louise Thackery. Although she was raised in the New Point area, she moved to Cameron, MO her senior year. She graduated from Cameron, MO High School in 1930 and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1935. A registered nurse, she served as Director of Nursing at Margaret Mary Hospital. She was an honorary board member of the Ripley County Red Cross. She was a passionate fisherman, gardener, canner, and genealogist. She was also an active member of the Batesville United Methodist Church and member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was never bored. Her family said she was the best euchre player in the family and also she was the fastest hickory nut meat picker that they knew of. She was MVP of the High School Girls Soccer Team. She and Gladys Nolte help start the tradition of making the Chrismons for the children of the church, a tradition still carried on today. She joined the Toastmasters, a speaking group, when she was in her 90's. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 26, 2011, 4-8pm at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN with O.E.S. services at 7pm. Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 11:00am at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Dimick officiating. Burial will be in Old Salem Cemetery, south of Batesville. Memorials are suggested to Old Salem Cemetery or Decatur County Hospice c/o the funeral home.
