Ruth Hawk Zimmerman passed away on February 25, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Western Hills, after a short illness. Ruth Hawk was born in West Harrison, Indiana on July 11, 1915. She and her sister Helen Hawk, lived with their parents, Alice Cary Hawk and Latham Lewis Hawk in the Harrison area during their formative years. Ruth graduated from Harrison High School in 1933 with her future husband, David Pierce Zimmerman, with whom she had attended school since the early grades. She attended Miller Business College in Cincinnati, receiving her secretarial degree in 1935. Ruth worked for the Jergens Company prior to her marriage to David in 1940. They were married in Lawrence, Kansas, where David had obtained his pilot's license at Parks Air College. They lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Omaha, Nebraska; and New Orleans, Louisiana, where David worked for Pan American World Airways. In September 1947, David died and Ruth returned to Harrison, giving birth to David Pierce Zimmerman in October. They lived at a number of addresses over the next six years including Marvin Road, Kater Avenue, Constance Place, and finally, Sycamore Street, where she and her sister lived for the next fifty years. After returning to Harrison in the late 1940s, Ruth worked for the Merchants Bank on State Street and in 1952, began working for the construction company building the Feed Materials Production Center for the National Lead Company in Fernald, Ohio. She became secretary to the plant manager, a position she held until 1980, when she retired after twenty-six years of service. Ruth and Helen lived their retirement years to the fullest, traveling to Columbia, South Carolina and Harrisonburg, Virginia, to spend time with David, his wife Diana, and their daughters, Cary and Annie. They traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, many times with their life-long friends, Marge and Neil Platt. Helen passed away in 2001 after battling Alzheimer's disease for several years. Ruth remained a fixture in the community for the next decade, living alone and driving to the doctor, the beauty shop, the grocery and participating in events of the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a proud, life-long member. She will be missed by her many friends, and particularly her family: her son David; daughter-in-law Diana; grandchildren and their husbands, Cary and James Cucinelli of Springfield, Virginia and Drs. Annie and Chris Libbey of Lynchburg, Virginia; her great-grandchildren, Joseph Leopold Cucinelli, David Louis Cucinelli, Luke Harrison Libbey, and Charlotte Reese Libbey; her cousin Fran Brickner of Harrison; and her "second son" Dr. Michael C. Welch of Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Harrison, Ohio or Hospice of Cincinnati. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 115 S. Vine Street in Harrison, Ohio at 3PM on Saturday afternoon, May 14th.
