Willis "Coach" G. H. Dunker, 85, Batesville, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. Born July 14, 1925, in Seymour, he was the son of Gus and Emma (Kilgas) Dunker. On June 18, 1950, he married Barbara (Doell) Dunker, who survives. He graduated from Shields High School in three and a half years. In 1943, as a high school football center, he ran for a 69-yard touchdown. The U.S. Navy World War II veteran was stationed in Hawaii. While attending Franklin College, Dunker received an all-state honorable mention as a football center. He was also the baseball team captain and Letterman's Club president. He graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1963, he received his master's degree in education from Indiana University and in 1966, he qualified for the superintendent's degree. The longtime Hillcrest Country Club member made three hole in ones there and three on other courses. Dunker was a Batesville Lions Club 50-year member and past president, Batesville Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1130 member, Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 and Moose Lodge, Lakeland, Fla., life member. He was also very involved with Boys State through Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271. Through the 40 and 8 Club, he was able to get nearly 100 young women nursing scholarships. The St. Mark Lutheran Church member served on its council for many years. The lifelong teacher, who was known as "Coach" by many, spent 35 years in education at Wegan Lutheran School and six high schools: Hayden, Elnora, Shoals, Seymour, Jim Town and, most recently, Batesville from 1963-85. Primarily a baseball and football coach, he also directed the area's youth in basketball and track. The three-time conference Football Coach of the Year helped 28 football and baseball players gain college scholarships. His notable accomplishments include being the only Indiana coach to have a player on the first all-state football team and one on the first all-star state baseball team. Dunker was the founding father of the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association. In 1998, he and his brother, Don, were the first brother combination to be inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame. Survivors also include one son and daughter-in-law: Thomas Wayne and Susan Dunker, Columbus; one daughter and son-in-law: Danae and Dorrance Thorn, Minneapolis; two granddaughters: Erin (Yasser) El Kalla and Alyson Dunker; and one great-granddaughter: Hannah El Kalla. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Don, Paul and Lee Dunker; and one sister: Hilda Smith. Visitation is Thursday, June 30, from 4-8 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home. The Rev. Jill Kepler Campbell will officiate the 10 a.m. service Friday, July 1, at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Burial with military rites is at the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
